Following the launch of the WEEELABEX standards in April 2011, 25 WEEE compliance schemes came together in Prague on 17 April 2013 to establish the WEEELABEX organisation. The organisation is an international non-profit legal entity that has established qualification auditors according to the WEEELABEX standards and promotes the adoption of these standards by operators and Member States as a means to improve WEEE management practices in Europe.
It was a multi-stakeholder project carried out by the WEEE Forum in cooperation with stakeholders from the producer community and the processing industry. It started in 2009; the launch of the WEEELABEX organisation, which was established in Prague on 17 April 2013, is the culmination of the project. The project had two objectives. One was to design a set of standards related to collection, sorting, storage, transport, preparation for reuse, treatment, processing and disposal of all types of WEEE. The other objective was to establish a process for monitoring companies through audits conducted by auditors trained by their office. Successful audits result in operators and processes being listed on a publicly accessible WEEELABEX website. This process of auditing and listing processes is called a "compliance audit" (CV). Therefore, in addition to the standards and the launch of the new organisation, the project has also resulted in proprietary audit process documents and reporting templates.
Since February 2018, the managing director Gerhard Fritz has been a certified WEEELABEX auditor. In the course of this activity, among other things, facilities for recycling refrigeration equipment are assessed and their conformity with the applicable legal provisions is evaluated.
